That's an interesting question. I dunno, so far there definitely seems to be an undercurrent of anger in the books from more recently post-colonial countries. I suppose you could say that Disgrace has a somewhat more hopeful conclusion than White Tiger or In a Free State, but still, it's pretty bleak.

Of course, I'm wary of conflating the historical/political position of any country with the literature it produces, but clearly there are forms of experience being dealt with in these places that are not being dealt with in others.

I'm curious to know whether you'll come to find the Booker Prize winning books to be relatively more 'depressing' than 'hopeful' (assuming we can dichotomize books in this way). Perhaps it's the case that the ones dealing with colonialism and post-colonialism tend to have that 'depressing' bent more than other Booker winners.
